Over this past summer I received an email to this website from a man who worked at a local Police Department. He asked me to call him and discuss some posters that had been put up around the city. I assumed the worst and removed all my blog postings that might incriminate me further. Having seen too many spy/cop and robber movies I immediately tried to figure out where the nearest payphone was to my apartment and how to get a hold of a voice changer.
Then I realized I would have to use the quarters previously designated for laundry. I picked up my cell phone and made the call. 20 minutes later I hung up the phone.

During the conversation he politely called me Mute and never even considered asking for my last name. His mom has been an artist for a long time and he likes the idea behind my stencils. He had received an anonymous email complaining about one of my stencils and was just following up. I was able to enlighten him on the identity of this anonymous tipster (for someone had sent me some much quoted hate mails from their personal email account) as well as the ingredients in my homemade paste (though not the amounts). He had found great entertainment watching some other officers try to peel off one of the posters.

The Triumvirate - Complete

Here they are! All the siblings immortalized in spray paint. I am proud now with them all complete. During the painting I am usually thinking "dang dang dang... this is all wrong!" but then I go eat nachos and come back and realize, "Hey, not so bad!" So either the stencils are good or the nachos are even better. The wildcard is the paint fumes. -Mute

The nights are getting cold with no insulation from the clouds. I'm sick of the sun burning them. Day after day they deal with that. It is a shame.
I could see the usual constellations tonight because of the solar destruction. I watched a red-eye flight blink its way south. The 7 Sisters had a friend over for a few seconds but something went wrong and the guest became a red-blinking soup in the Big Dipper.
The story changed and to me the plane became a fickle star who is sick of her man. The emotion was in the flashing lights. I wish I could have warned her. A star moving that fast burns up fast, or it hits the ground and destroys the dinosaurs.

Alpine Ideal

I drew these sketches with sharpie on 22" x 28" paper. I was listening to nels cline's jazz trio when I drew them (Suite:Bittersweet). If you listen to it then the insanity makes sense. The first one is obviously much more structured, I didn't bother opening my eyes for several parts of the second one. Thinking can be a nuisance. -Mute

Part II of the Triumvirate

This one is the same size as the previous one. The border will be decided once the third piece is complete. Hopefully within the next week. My camera slightly altered the coloring when I took this photo. The background should be plain white. So make the proper adjustments to your contacts or glasses. Or to your computer. -Mute

"Hey Brother"

The stencil is complete of my brother. I am still going to do the border and fill in the white space but the stencil itself is done. This is on an 18" x 36" canvas.

New Big Stencil

This one is by far the biggest stencil I have made. Its been painted on three separate canvases that combine to be 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. To fit it in the frame of my camera I had to stand on a step ladder. Which is crazy because of how tall I am anyways. I am pretty proud of how this one turned out and look forward to making more. Anybody want a full size stencil of them self? Of your girlfriend? Your first car which you had a clever name for that broke down on you on your way to college and your dad had towed away in the middle of the night with no warning? Edgar Allen Poe

Here is a new stencil I am proud of ,though its detail is a step backwards from what I was making a couple months ago. I promise a new wave of stencils will be posted in the coming weeks which will hopefully be of higher quality. This one was made for my sister who is a high school teacher. (she teaches American Lit. at a high school, hence the stencil of Edgar Allen Poe). I probably should have given her something she could use a little better though, like a cattle prod.

Hey guys, sorry its been such a long time. Since my last post I had finals, graduated from college, and completed my most time consuming stencil to date. Now I can lose focus on my college degree and gain it on my art.

Chrome Portrait

I had much more difficulty on this stencil than I had with my last. There was a reaction between the chrome and white spray paint. I ended up layering 4-5 different colors under what is now the white and chrome looking areas. After much frustration and paint fumes I think I got it right. Patience is a wonderful thing though it would have been much more entertaining to hurl the canvas off my balcony like a frisbee. maybe next time... always next time...

Layered stencil! not titled yet. hold your horses.

Here is my newest stencil. I painted it with 4 different layers of shades (using 3 different stencils) on a 22 inch by 28 inch canvas. My studio area is my balcony that sits over the pool my apartment building shares with each other. Today was a slightly sunny day and some neighbors decided that it was an excuse to sunbathe and went out to sit by the pool while I was painting above them. Soon after they sat down I heard grumbling and they left. Im not sure if they realized that its still too cold to sunbathe or if stray drops of spray paint were dissolving in their sunscreen.

Either way I got my work done. Here it is!

I decided to start putting my stencils on canvas because it holds the paint much better. Also, I witnessed a large stencil on canvas sell for over 20 thousand dollars. Any takers? I'll even give a discount for this one.

Montana

I spent the last week in Montana where they have many more stars than Los Angeles has lining Hollywood Blvd. and through the "marine layer" (read: Smog) combined. There was so little light pollution that these photos took a 35 - 40 minute exposure. On the first photo the battery actually froze. It was also much colder than LA.The posts in the foreground of the second photo are so lit up because there was a little bit of light escaping from the cabin.

Polaroid recently announced they will no longer be producing Polaroid instant film because it is not quit as instant as digital film. I first decided I was going to stockpile a ridiculous amount of it. Then I noticed the expiration date. so... I am now saving so I might buy the patent to the technology and start producing it myself. It could be my hobby. producing potentially toxic film. If you would like to invest please just wire the money to the Bank of the Cayman Islands. Just say its for David. They know me.
